Author Guidelines

NOTE: Authors must register and login to an account on OJS in order to start a submission. We are no longer accepting research articles, but welcome submissions of book reviews.

Book reviews will accompany research articles in the inaugural edition of Martyria (formerly The Heretic). We invite reviews of recently published books engaging one or more of the following areas within Divinity:

  • Biblical Studies and Languages
  • Systematic and Philosophical Theology
  • Historical Theology and Church History
  • Religion in relation to Politics and/or Science

Submissions are welcome from:

  • Undergraduate students
  • Mature students completing their first taught Divinity degree (e.g., BD or MDiv) who have not previously earned a Divinity qualification
  • Recent graduates who have not yet completed one year of a second Divinity degree

Students from other disciplines are welcome to submit, provided their review engages substantially with one or more of the areas listed above.

Review Requirements

Book reviews must:

  1. Engage a book published within the last five years (2021 onwards).
  2. Include discussion of the book’s summary, contribution, strengths, and weaknesses (in any order).
  3. Be between 750 and 1,500 words in length.
  4. Be submitted as a single Microsoft Word document (.docx).
  5. Include in the top of the page the full bibliographic citation of the reviewed work—author, full title, place of publication, publisher, year, edition (if applicable), page count, special features (e.g., maps, colour plates), price, and ISBN.
  6. Styled according to The Chicago Manual of Style, 17th ed. (University of Chicago Press, 2017). However, British spelling conventions following the Oxford English Dictionary should be followed. References to the reviewed book should appear in-text (e.g., “. . . ‘Jesus is Lord’ (42)”).

Reviews may originate as university coursework but do not need to do so. The submission does not need to be anonymized.
